How High Should Your Bed Be? – A Guide to Bed Heights

What does “bed height” mean – and why is it important?

When we talk about bed height, we mean the distance from the floor to the top of the mattress. It’s the height you sit on and get down from.

It affects:

  • How easy it is to get in and out of the bed
  • Safety, especially with co-sleeping and when there are children in the bed.
  • The visual style (low profile vs. “hotel look”).

It does not affect:

  • The comfort when lying down. This is controlled by the materials in the mattress and mattress topper, not by the height.
In short:
  • Tall beds often appear more luxurious, without necessarily being so.
  • Bed height is primarily about getting in and out – not about comfort.
  • Comfort is mainly determined by the top layers: mattress and mattress topper.
  • At FAMBED, we prioritise value for money, comfort and safety over unnecessary height layers.

The myth of the tall bed

Yes, a tall bed can give a “hotel-like” luxurious look, but height alone does not make a bed better to lie in, despite several luxury brands marketing a different story.

If the choice is between spending the budget on extra height layers – or on better materials in the mattress/mattress topper – we know what we choose.

Safety with co-sleeping

Now that we have established that height does not affect comfort, it is primarily aesthetics and safety we need to consider regarding the bed’s height.

In case of accidents, fall height is worth considering. A lower overall height reduces the risk of serious injury if someone rolls out over the edge during the night. This is especially relevant with small children.

At FAMBED, we focus on value for money, comfort and safety. We have chosen to spend the budget where it is felt every night:

  • Quality materials in mattress and mattress topper for comfort and support
  • Stable construction for safety and durability
  • Sensible total height for easy getting in/out and lower fall height when co-sleeping

In practice, this means we do not add lots of extra “height layers” that mainly make the bed more expensive without improving sleep. We prioritise comfort and safety – and a good price/performance ratio.

High vs low bed (advantages and disadvantages)

High bed (look & feel):

  • Perceived as “hotel luxury”
  • Can be easy to get up from for tall people
  • Increases fall height
  • Often becomes more expensive if the height is created by extra layers that do not necessarily improve lying comfort

Low bed (family & safety):

  • Lower fall height – good for co-sleeping
  • Often better value (less wasted height)
  • Can feel low for very tall people or those with limited mobility
